Why Are Catfish Accounts a Big Problem on Twitter/X?
Fake accounts on Twitter/X are more than just an inconvenience—they can:
- Steal your identity by using your name, profile picture, and content.
- Scam your followers by pretending to be you and soliciting money or information.
- Hurt your reputation by engaging in misleading or harmful behavior under your name.
- Divert your engagement and visibility by drawing traffic away from your official account.
How to Take Down a Fake Twitter/X Account
- Collect the URL to the infringing profile.
- Pro Tip: Also collect the header, avatar, and all infringing posts to submit in your report.
- Go to Twitter/X's DMCA form: help.x.com/en/forms/ipi/dmca
- Select "I am the copyright owner".
- Fill out the report's information prompts:
- Copyright Owner's Full Name
- Your Full Name
- Company
- Job Title
- Address
- Phone Number
- Explain the material being pirated, including links and a description of the original work.
- Share the URL(s) to the infringing X profile and describe the infringing material.
- Accept the required statements, digitally sign, and then submit.
Despite multiple reports, Twitter/X may take time to act—or fail to remove posts or the account entirely.
