Tips for Handling Burnout as Small Creators
The feeling of having a good sales day is almost euphoric. Worries about bills, debt and expensive things coming up suddenly wash away. As smaller content creators we don’t always have the luxury to not worry. You might start comparing yourself to other people, blaming the bad days on yourself. “Well maybe if I make more content.” “Maybe if I push myself harder.” You start pushing and pushing even when your body and mind are desperate for a break. For a lot of smaller content creators those much needed breaks are hard to come by so we keep on pushing. Then it hits. Not leaving the bed, brain fog washing over us, our bodies begging for just a couple more hours of sleep while our minds race and tell us we have to keep going. That’s what I call burnout.
When resources are limited, fanbases are small and we are keeping constant tabs on our site ranking, how do we really take a “break” and let ourselves enjoy time away? For creators who don’t always have the luxury of taking large amounts of time off without the worry, it’s all about proactive measures to keep a steady workflow without breaking your body and brain.
Schedule and Space Out Your Content
The key to a ranking is consistency, but sometimes life gets in the way. On those feel good days where you have tons of energy, get the most bang for your buck! Keep that makeup on, do an outfit change then film some more. One day can turn into weeks worth of content by milking it dry and utilizing various sites’ scheduling features. Photosets, promo pics, highlights, gifs, shorter videos and quick cam shows can all be pulled from just one makeup/outfit look. I PROMISE you don’t have to post every single day. Instead, make your smaller fanbase miss you, and use promotion to get them excited about future releases.
Take Small Breaks Every Day
Give yourself time to recharge and evaluate how you’re feeling every single day. Take an extra long shower, make sure you’re not starving and thirsty. Whatever self care looks like to you, do it. Making those grind days more comfortable will have an over all positive effect on you AND your content! People who work outside of our industry get breaks during work periods…so why shouldn’t we? Taking your time and spreading out your day to include time for self love will lead you to not need large chunks of time off. Listen to your body. Catch a nap between cam shows, keep your body well fuelled and you and your fans will thank you!
Explore Different Avenues of Content Creation
On those days where filming or camming just isn’t happening but you still want to be productive, take a chill day to explore different sites! There are so many sites now that offer vastly different things it’s hard to choose which ones are right for you, but branching out and trying different sites can be super refreshing! Whether it be NSFW or SFW there are plenty of avenues in content creation and the more variety you have the less likely it is to get stuck in a cycle. You can post content from one site to another, or make some older content exclusive to one site while adding other streams of income while also growing new fanbases!
Whether you’re just starting out or are an indie content creator or trying to gain a solid fanbase, the workload can be exhausting. You should be damn proud of all your hard work! But the most important part of content creation is the CREATOR. We are human, we have human needs and it is more than okay to take the time to fulfill your personal needs. Your mind, body and work will thank you!
